So this is a mandatory training program at work now (in a financial office, in a sky-rise, for what it’s worth). I realize it’s the responsible thing to do, trying to improve safety and limit panic by proactively responding to potential threats, but I also can’t help but feel some disappointment in the reality of the situation. Welcome to 2016 gang!
In fairness to current times, we did have lock-down procedures in school 20 years ago, (which was pre-Columbine even!), but that just felt like it was because we were minors in a shitty school in a high crime neighborhood with an open campus, it didn’t feel like a movement or a new norm. I mean, I think we might have been hiding from flashing perverts as much as shooters.

We just had this too at my work place. Did you get a corny video like we did?

I’ve told this story before...I work in a Military building with mostly former and active Military folks.
We did a briefing on what do we do if someone steals your work phone (and you see him do it). The answers ranged from beating the dude to death with fists, coffee cup, a pastrami sandwich (This was mine), random weapons folks carry and/or other various forms of pain/dismemberment.
Needless to say we were told we were incorrect and to just call our security officer to report the theft.
Officer: “I think you have the wrong audience.”

I also had to complete this training as well. What everyday office items were YOU able to identify as potential weapons?

The video is coming out this week, followed by a test.
I don’t think we’ll have an actual mock active shooter scenario, which could have livened up the day.

Oh yum, pastrami!

The training is later this week. Now that you’ve prepped me, I’m eyeing my hole punch, and I’ve got one hell of a paper weight.
Who am I kidding? I’m like 3 feet from an emergency exit that locks on the way in but not on the way out. I’m fucking OUT. OF. HERE! Sorry coworkers, I will call 911, I promise.

What ever happened to the old days when people would keep it to the post office.

No, no, no. You use a Rueben, not a pastrami sandwhich. The density is higher resulting in higher injury rates. No wonder he said you where incorrect.

Stripping down to your thong and attacking them is apparently an incorrect answer if you have the same trainers as I did.

“Going financial” just doesn’t have the same ring as going postal.

Depending on the shooter’s fears, that could be an effective tactic.

I took one at my university, and the basic idea is
1. Run away if you can
2. Hide if you can’t
3. Fight back if found
Our police department did make it sound like they didn’t mind the idea of CCW holders packing heat, so that might help as well.

Run-Hide-Fight is the deal.
CCW at a University? I thought that was illegal. I really can’t see my employer encouraging anyone to pack heat, regardless, and I don’t think our training will include the police.

Yes, that’s incorrect way. The thong might be a very threatening looking weapon. Especially if the smelliness can be estimated visually to be in severe level. So the correct way is go completely naked and wave your thongs in threatening manner.
In Finland we only practice fire alarms...

We had them quarterly in school, pre Columbine. In a mostly rural low crime area.
I remember when post office shootings were a “thing”.

My employer has a pair of machine guns in the facility. I’m not actually sure if my badge grants access to that room. It actually might but I don’t want to test it.
